Discussed by the council in recent meetings is the Percent for Art program. As it has been suggested previously that there should be a reduction in public art funding. The Percent for Art program however was left unscathed! It was noted that Art improves downtown Ann Arbor and brings in trade to the shopping areas. However, in addition to public art paid by Ann Arbor council, it was noted that 3 million people per year pass by works of art in UM health facilities and that it has a positive impact.
Asides from the feel good factor, it is suggested that investments in the arts, pay off $10 for every dollar put in. In the case of the University of Michigan Museum of Art people come from all over the state to visit the museum’s new addition. Therefore continuing investment in the arts is seen as a sound financial investment.
Of course, lets not forget that Ann Arbor was listed As 9th Best Mid Sized City for the Arts! All the big cities have public art and so Ann Arbor should continue to do so!
