Going Green is very much the way of the world right now in all industries – including real estate!
However, Michigan is not exactly the state that comes to mind when you think “green” thanks to its industrial past – however think again!
Michigan is exactly the place that you should think of, particularly in the metro Detroit area!
“Metromode” is looking back at the past year at all of the things which the area has done which are “green”. From green roofs to solar panels and much, much more! Including eco-sensitive urban planning!
Most interesting is Green Roofs! Environmentally, green roofs absorb and, in some cases clean, storm runoff. Habitat is created for insects and birds. Because the ambient temperature of a building is reduced, less energy is required to cool it. Economically, green roofs tend to last a lot longer than traditional ones. In some ways this is going back to our roots when humans first started building their own homes by burrowing into the earth and into rock – most of the old world is littered with preserved examples of these types of homes which have “green roofs” – definitely an interesting idea and there are even do it yourself kits around!
LEED and the US Green Council are of course driving green standards in all areas of real estate as we have written before and the National Association of Realtors has “gone green” with their HQ in Washington DC to set an example to all in the real estate business. Particularly as more and more buyers are demanding green homes.
Here in Ann Arbor we are always pushing to be more energy efficient – this blog has written about many ways to winterize your home to stop waste heat and energy usage.
