Women's Council Luncheon celebrates the Future of Women in the Ann Arbor Area May 13th 2008

The Women’s Council raises funds to secure the future of women at Washtenaw
Community College.  The proceeds from this year’s luncheon go the Women’s
Council endowed scholarship at Washtenaw Community College and to sustain
the Women’s Resource and Student Center, which offers support in a holistic
manner for students who need extra assistance.

Included here is an inspiring speech presented by Amanda Klain, Scholarship
Recipient

Speech for the Women’s Council Luncheon

This is quite an honor to be a part of this luncheon and I thank you for the opportunity to share a small part of my life-story with you.

Although I hold a Bachelors Degree from WMU that I received in 1991, until three years ago when I first began my education at WCC I was still trying to find some type of meaningful focus in my life.

For me the past fifteen years have been a non-academic exploration of the relationship between human health and our environment, and how physical, mental, spiritual and emotional healing can take place through the acknowledgement and heartfelt application of that interdependence.

From 2003-2005 I worked at a health center here in Ann Arbor that combines allopathic medicine with alternative treatments. Inspired by the doctors, nurses and therapists that I worked with I decided to pursue my nursing career and enrolled in WCC for fall 2005, and I took classes every semester until Spring/Summer 2007 when I realized it was ok to take a semester off!

Every time I walked through the Student Center I was magnetically drawn to the Women’s Resource Center and I soon made an appointment with a counselor (Liz Orbitz) who provided me with much needed academic counseling as well as information on all the different financial aid options. For me the Women’s Resource Center is the place that really brought together my experience of getting back into the academic world. Whenever I hear classmates talking about the struggles of juggling life, work and school and lack of support in that struggle, I always start rattling off to them about the Women’s Resource Center and all the services that WCC offers and what doors opened for me when I reached out for support.

I have received three Foundation Scholarships which I am extremely grateful for. It is such an incredible gift to have financial burdens lifted off the shoulders of people like me that for whatever reason are not financially able to comfortably pay for the education that they seek.

There is also a less tangible support that runs somewhat deeper in meaning and more heartfelt than money can ever be. For me receiving these scholarships is another way of someone saying "I believe in you and your dreams and I trust you to do your best in making them come true". There is nothing than a little outside pressure and accountability to keep you on track! I pursue my nursing career with all of you in mind and with gratitude.

I want to thank everyone for listening. It is very inspiring to be surrounded with role models and to share in the diversity of our own personal stories of the journey into empowerment through and by the support of each other. Thank you!

I was thrilled to be a part of this worthwhile cause. Amanda’s gratitude
was heartfelt and made all attendees proud to part of such a worthwhile
cause.

First Residents Move In to Downtown Ann Arbor’s Ashley Terrace

May 13th, 2008 admin Posted in Uncategorized 2 Comments »

Ashley Terrace Owners Buying into "Lifestyle" and Convenience

After 22 months of construction, Ashley Terrace opened its doors last month!  The first residents have taken occupancy and are loving it.  Located at the edge of Ann Arbor’s Old West Side, views from higher units are excellent and the convenience is key.  You can do just about everything without even thinking about getting into your car!  So far Joseph Freed and Associates have sold about 60 of the 99 available units at Ashley Terrace.  This is the third and largest housing development to be completed in the downtown Ann Arbor area in the last few years.

Historically, this project has really helped to determine the demand for urban living in Ann Arbor since it was only one of several proposed projects that had begun construction.  In the last many months this perceived demand has brought more than 15 large projects to the downtown area.  Five of those have been completed or are well underway:  Liberty Lofts (which has sold out), Loft322, Ashley Terrace, 4Eleven Lofts and Zaragon Place.  Construction is also expected to begin on The Gallery this year (developer Concannon already has 30 reservations on units).

Considering the Ann Arbor buyer’s market, keep your eyes open for developer incentives and/or upgrades.  Developer pricing likely won’t be compromised, but there are often times opportunities for purchasing incentives on new units.

For more information about available units in Ashley Terrace, please contact Kathy Toth and Team.

City Place Clearing Puts Seven Ann Arbor Homes up for Sale

May 10th, 2008 admin Posted in Uncategorized No Comments »

Developer Alex De Parry is willing to sell each historic Ann Arbor home for only one dollar if the new owners will pay to relocate

Seven Ann Arbor homes over a century old are basically in the way - however the developer of City Place wants to preserve their history.  In an effort to do so, Alex De Parry is selling each home for only a dollar if the buyer is willing to relocate the structure.  In their place is a propsosed four-story apartment building called City Place.  This is the second proposal for the project since January.  The new plan calls for approximately 100 units with 15% of them priced by "affordable housing" guidelines.  De Parry has so far been unsuccessful in relocating the structures to new Ann Arbor locations, thus the inventive plan to "give" them away.  At least one of these homes was once preserved as a historic structure housing some of Ann Arbor’s early local politicians.

So how easy is it to just move a house?  Not terribly, but it is doable.  The toughest part of the move is coordinating with the utility companies to clear the road so other wires and things like stoplights wont get destroyed in the process.  The seven homes available are:

  • 407 S. Fifth Ave.: Queen Anne/Dutch Colonial style; 2,650 square feet.
  • 411 S. Fifth Ave.: Queen Anne style; 3,134 square feet.
  • 415 S. Fifth Ave.: Greek Revival style known as the Beakes House; 3608 square feet.
  • 419 S. Fifth Ave.: Queen Anne style; 2,726 square feet.
  • 427 S. Fifth Ave.: Victorian style; 4,051 square feet.
  • 433 S. Fifth Ave.: Greek Revival style; 3,214 square feet.
  • 437 S. Fifth Ave.: Vernacular; 1,951 square feet.

Please contact Kathy Toth and Team for more information about these homes or the proposed City Place.
