Ann Arbor City Council Approves Liberty Street Re-zoning
Revitalization of McKinley Towne Center hopes to attract customers
The width of an alley running from Washington to Liberty Street was the only holdup on continuing the Liberty and Division Street revitalization project known as McKinley Towne Center. Once community concerns were voiced, the narrowed 10 foot alley was restored to its originally planned 26 feet. This paved the way for a unanimous re-zoning approval of the 515 E. Liberty Street project. McKinley Inc. plans to tear down a vacant one-story building in favor of a new two-story building on the 1.15 acre site that used to be home to National City Bank. Site plan and development agreement for this parcel were also approved.
The McKinley Towne Center revitalization project proposes to add retail on Liberty Street from the Towne Center all the way to the Michigan Theater. Some locals see this area as a historic “dead-zone” and are thrilled to see a new face.
The discussion of the alley attracted a few local residents to the meeting who suggested a project similar to the covered atrium at the Nickels Arcade. Mayor John Hieftje said it was not in the plans and suggested he would like to see the space kept open. Berriz of McKinley Inc said the space would potentially house tables and eating areas fitting an overall intention of “quiet usable” space.
The McKinley Towne Center plan also highlights new projects such as the Ann Arbor Hotel and the 4 Eleven Lofts project.
