City of Ann Arbor to Participate in Street Car Study

The City of Ann Arbor recently approved a study on the possibility of bringing street cars to Ann Arbor. They have been toying with the idea for awhile, but city leaders worry about the potential cost of such a project. Preliminary costs are estimated to top $50 million. Nonetheless, officials have agreed to do more research.
There are many visions of what an Ann Arbor streetcar system would look like. One includes utilizing shuttle buses to transport people from outlying neighborhoods to major street car hubs. Streetcars can transport anywhere from 80-200 passengers depending on the system. Buses typically max out at 50 riders.
City transportation manager, Eli Cooper, Believes a growing number of workers in the city will justify such an investment. A mainstay of university students would also be crucial to the success. Many US cities have employed the use of streetcars with incredible success rates.
If city leaders approve the initiative, street cars could be buzzing around Ann Arbor within the next five to eight years!
