Big Changes Ahead for U of M’s Stockwell Hall
One of Ann Arbor’s historical landmarks is getting ready for big changes. Stockwell Hall at the University of Michigan, traditionally a women’s dorm, is going to be modified to become a co-ed facility. The number of females requesting all-women residences has been on the decline and the university is keen to meet changing demands with more flexible Ann Arbor student housing options. Four other all-women dorms will remain: Betsy Barbour, Helen Newberry, the Martha Cook Building and the Henderson House. Modifying Stockwell Hall will also allow the University to provide more single dorm rooms for returning students, both women and men.
Stockwell has also been undergoing a renovation which will preserve the Tudor Revival architecture and historic interior character. Old plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems will also be replaced. Finished rooms and common areas will offer air conditioning, wi-fi, lounges, kitchenettes and remodeled bathrooms. The old dining hall will be replaced with a community space for recreating - including music practice and performances. This overhaul is part of the University of Michigan’s Residential Life Initiative, an effort to bring student housing up to speed to meet future needs.
